What Is a Subserosal Fibroid?
Fibroids seen on the outermost part of the uterus that have grown outwards from the surface of the uterus are called ‘subserosal fibroids’ (fibroids numbered 5-6). Some fibroids are observed attached to the uterus by a thin stalk, and these fibroids are called ‘pedunculated subserosal fibroids’ (fibroid number 7). If subserosal fibroids grow towards the outside of the uterus and cause an irregular appearance on the outer surface of the uterus, they are named ‘exophytic fibroids’. These fibroids generally grow without giving any signs and are detected during a routine gynaecological examination. If a woman does not have regular gynaecological examinations and has a subserosal fibroid, these fibroids grow very large and can be felt in the abdomen as a mass. If these fibroids grow very large, they are called ‘giant fibroids’. If these fibroids do not grow very large, they are generally followed up. If rapid growth or a change in the fibroid is detected during follow-up, it must be removed surgically.
